Baylor Football

Baylor had to use 5 different QBs in one game ... and still broke bowl records vs. No. 10 UNC

http://www2.baylor.edu/baylorproud/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/football-jan15.jpg

The Bears were without their top two quarterbacks and top two weapons, which makes this one of the most impressive offensive performances in bowl season history.

Remember how Ohio State overcame two quarterback injuries last year? No. 17 Baylor had to deal with about double that along the way to its fourth 10-win season in five years, capping with a 49-38 win over No. 10 North Carolina in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

http://rukkus.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Baylor-Bears.jpg

The Bears broke the bowl's rushing record ... in the first half, with 358. They put up the most rushing yards an Art Briles team ever had ... in the first half. (That's saying something. Despite the popular assumption, Baylor runs all the time. The Bears ranked No. 4 in the country in rushing attempts per game before this one.)
The final total before kneeldowns: 756 yards, 645 of them on the ground, an all-time rushing record for any bowl (524 by Nebraska in the 1996 Fiesta). Johnny Jefferson led with 299 rushing yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns, also throwing for 24.

Aretha Franklin Performed “Natural Woman” at the Kennedy Center Honors, Brought Down the House

The 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors aired Tuesday night on CBS, this year honoring Carole King, George Lucas, Rita Moreno, Seiji Ozawa, and Cicely Tyson. But one particular performance took down the house: Aretha Franklin singing her 1967 single “(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman,” dedicated to the song’s cowriter Carole King.
Franklin blew kisses in the air in a full-length fur coat and glimmering earrings, sparkling clutch in hand.  Audience reactions were predictably awed: Barack Obama seemed to tear up before Franklin even got to the chorus, and an ecstatic-looking King sang along.

LSU's Fournette shows he's doesn't belong in college football

http://img.bleacherreport.net/img/images/photos/003/541/206/hi-res-ed07c6b106151c0a40928508100a27c9_crop_north.jpg?w=630&h=420&q=75

The LSU running back made that apparent, showing he's NFL ready in the Texas Bowl in Houston Tuesday night with his Tigers taking a 56-27 win over Texas Tech.
Unfortunately, Fournette, a true sophomore, has one more season to play for the Tigers until he is able to be eligible to declare for the NFL draft.
LSU scored 56 points in the game against the Red Raiders --€” the new school record for points scored in a bowl game --€” with Fournette being directly responsible for 30 of those points with his four rushing touchdowns along with one receiving touchdown. The points scores was a Texas Bowl record for an individual player. With his third rushing touchdown in the third quarter, Fournette set a LSU record with 21 rushing touchdowns on the season -- finishing his season with 22 on the year with his fifth score of the game in the fourth quarter.

"This is a night that Leonard Fournette would have again, again and again. I wouldn't call it routine because he's not a routine runner, he's a special back," LSU head coach Les Miles said. "We would expect him to have nights like this. He's fast, he's strong, and capable. He's one of the more competitive men I know, he wanted to win this game, no doubt."
While LSU fans are excited to see their star running back return for another season, the average pro-football career for a running back is about three years, meaning Fournette could likely be taking years off making millions in the NFL. The rules aren't likely to change in time to make a difference for Fournette, so the running back is looking forward to another season in Baton Rouge and wanting to go for a championship.

Auburn NFL roundup: More history for Cam Newton, but not for Carolina Panthers

Carolina quarterback Cam Newton reached another NFL first on Sunday, but it didn't prevent the Panthers from losing for the first time this season. The Atlanta Falcons' 20-13 victory prevented Carolina from becoming the third team in NFL history to have a 15-0 record.
The Falcons also ended the Panthers' 18-game regular-season winning streak, the third-longest in NFL history, which included a 38-0 win over Atlanta just two weeks ago.
The loss broke Newton's nine-game winning streak in December. Before Sunday, Carolina hadn't lost a game started by Newton in the 12th month since a 31-13 setback against the New Orleans Saints on Dec. 8, 2013.
Newton fumbled when he was sacked on Carolina's final snap of the game, allowing Atlanta to run out the final 62 seconds of their victory.

Cam Newton and Carson Palmer Both Have Compelling Cases to Win MVP

https://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/VPlRjUAOKneba6DLUVfxQCHQ7ZI=/0x0:4257x2838/2400x1600/cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/48116841/GettyImages-500864652.0.jpg

This year is an intriguing and convincing one in the MVP race in the NFL. It might be the most convincing one in for a little while, for an entire host of reasons. At this moment, Cam Newton appears the possible MVP as the Panthers have moved to 13-0 and are attempting to coordinate the 2007 Patriots. Tom Brady is in the blend, and frequently specified as the correlation point to Newton. Carson Palmer is sneaking, strangely getting less consideration than he may justify.

Before separating it further, would I be able to go on somewhat of a tirade? It appears that when there is a real case for a few applicants, the examination is more quieted than when there is by all accounts an obvious hopeful. Keep in mind when individuals were pushing for anybody yet Aaron Rodgers to win it in 2011, when Rodgers was having one of the best seasons ever? Tim Tebow and Peyton Manning (in light of the fact that he didn't play that year) were both talked about similar to the genuine MVPs. Two years prior, when Manning was setting touchdown records and the Broncos were moving up focuses, Brady (in spite of genuinely poor numbers by his elevated norms) was being proclaimed. I noted at the time how ineffectively Brady's numbers contrasted with MVP champs. As it turned out, those obvious decisions did flee with it, in spite of the dialogs early.

This is the year to real have dialog. Presently to the applicants.

Four years back, I called attention to a portion of the key factual markers for MVP victors. I don't think voters fundamentally utilize a formal agenda, yet the classes that most profoundly connected with winning the grant were for quarterbacks, all together: (1) Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt rank, (2) Passer Rating rank, (3) Pass TD rate, (4) Total TD Passes, and (5) Yards per Attempt. Different things, similar to finish rate and block attempt rate (especially when you definitely knew passer rating), and crude sums like passing yards and pass endeavors, are not key markers.

Include some group details, and Team Wins (where MVP QBs have found the middle value of a positioning of 1.9), and Team Points Scored (normal positioning of 3.0) have likewise been markers of who has won the recompense.

Here's the rank of every MVP applicant this year (I incorporated the main 5, however Dalton is harmed and does not have a possibility). I additionally incorporated the normal rank of all past QB AP MVP champs subsequent to 1978 in every class.

2015 NFL MVP Comparison

Russell Wilson is getting some buzz due to his hot streak. He has shot to #1 in Passer Rating. Obviously, that is the main class where he is main two. Pretty much as practically essential, the Seahawks are at 8-5, and are the most minimal scoring group among the competitors. Just three years since 1978 have seen a MVP win while not being on a group that completed in the main two in its meeting: 2008 Peyton Manning (12-4; behind Tennessee), 2003 Manning and Steve McNair (both 12-4, behind NE and KC), and 1995 Brett Favre (behind Dallas/San Francisco).

I think this is practically a three-man correlation, with two clear pioneers as I would see it.

Vrbata Scores 3 as Canucks Beat Sabres to Snap 5-Game Skid

Radim Vrbata scored three goals for his sixth career hat trick to help Vancouver beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 Monday night, snapping the Canucks' five-game losing streak.
Brandon Prust had a goal and an assist, and Henrik Sedin also scored for Vancouver, and Ryan Miller stopped 32 shots against his former team. The Canucks won for just the fourth time in their last 17 games. Daniel Sedin and Adam Cracknell added two assists each.
Brian Gionta and Sam Reinhart scored for Buffalo, and Linus Ullmark had 26 saves.
Vancouver extended its lead to 3-1 at 4:34 of the second as Prust scored his firt of the season off a nice pass in front from Derek Dorsett. Prust, who was fined $5,000 for his spear on Brad Marchand in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Boston, celebrated his first goal in 50 games.
Henrik Sedin tipped Alex Edler's shot past Ullmark with 2:42 remaining in the period for his ninth of the season and a three-goal advantage.
Reinhart pulled the Sabres, playing for the third time in four nights, within one at 1:51 of the third. Ryan O'Reilly stole the puck from Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis behind the Vancouver goal and fed Reinhart, who fired past Miller for his eighth.
Vrbata, who scored twice in the first, completed his hat trick with 5 1/2 minutes to go as he fired a shot past Ullmark for his ninth. It was his first three-goal game with the Canucks — and first since Oct. 3, 2013, while with Phoenix.
Bo Horvat and Chris Higgins had great chances for the Canucks early, but the Sabres grabbed the lead at 6:48 of the first period when Gionta batted a puck out of the air past Miller for his third on a play that stood up after video review.
The Canucks tied it just 80 seconds later when Vrbata scored his seventh after the Sabres couldn't clear their zone. Higgins saw his shot stopped by Ullmark, but the rebound spilled out to Vrbata.
Vancouver looked to have taken the lead with 6:32 left in the period, however Alexandre Burrows' goal off a scramble was waved off after the referee lost sight of the puck and blew his whistle.
Vrbata then made it 2-1 with 3:18 to go in the first as he scored on a slick deflection.
NOTES: Miller, who was traded by Buffalo to St. Louis at the 2014 trade deadline before he signed with Vancouver that summer, is now 2-1-0 against the Sabres. ... Prust's last goal prior to Monday came for Montreal against Buffalo on Feb. 3. ... Vancouver concludes a four-game homestand Wednesday against the New York Rangers. ... Buffalo visits Calgary on Thursday. ... The Canucks honored former players Markus Naslund, Todd Bertuzzi and Brendan Morrison — who made up the West Coast Express line during their time in Vancouver — prior to the game.

Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman allegedly fired eight gunshots in the garage of his Miami-area home following an October argument with his girlfriend in which she told police he “choked” her and pushed her against a wall, according to police reports obtained by Yahoo Sports.
No arrests were made after the incident, in which more than a dozen police officers were dispatched to Chapman’s home in Davie, Fla., around 11 p.m. on Oct. 30. Chapman’s girlfriend exited the house and hid in bushes following the argument that stemmed from something she found on Chapman’s cellphone, according to the police report.
"I've reviewed the facts as portrayed," Jay Reisinger, Chapman’s attorney, told Yahoo Sports on Monday night. "On behalf of Mr. Chapman, we vehemently deny the allegations as stated. Beyond that, we have no further comment at this time."
The Reds through a spokesman declined to comment when asked about the alleged incident.

The Whip is old news.
That was for Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., the rookie. In his second season, Beckham is on to newer, hipper dances for his touchdown celebrations. He pulled out the "Hit dem folks" dance on his 30-yard touchdown reception in Thursday night's 32-21 victory over the Washington Redskins at MetLife Stadium.
When Victor Cruz gets healthy, the Giants are hoping for a dance-off."It was nothing, man. I'm just out there having fun. It's called 'Hit dem folks.' It just a little dance they created in Atlanta," Beckham said. "Always bringing something new.Yeah, man, that is all it is."

Los Angeles (AFP) - Reigning league MVP Stephen Curry honoured his father with an explosive third quarter performance and Kobe Bryant took his farewell tour up another notch in a pair of key NBA contests.
Curry watched at halftime as his father and former Charlotte star Dell Curry was featured in a half-time ceremony then followed up with a 28-point third quarter as the Golden State Warriors easily defeated the Hornets 116-99.Bryant, who announced three days ago he was retiring at the end of the regular season, rattled in the go-ahead jump shot with 30 seconds left in the fourth en route to a 108-104 win over the Washington Wizards.Golden State's victory extends the Warriors best start in NBA history to 20-0. Curry dominated in the key third quarter and had Golden State in such complete control that he sat down for the fourth quarter"It was special," he said of the ceremony for his father, who is the franchise's all-time scoring leader. "I got to come out and see my dad's halftime ceremony and hear his speech. I might have got a little inspiration from that."This was a homecoming for Stephen Curry who grew up in Charlotte and played high school and college ball there. He finished 14-of-18 from the field and eight-of-11 from three-point range.
He had just 12 points at halftime, and then erupted for 28 third-quarter points, including the Warriors' last 24 over the final 4:55 of the period. He hit four three-pointers in the final 1:53 of the third and finished with a game-high 40 points on the night.
"I am just playing with confidence," he said. "I feel like I am a better player than I was last year. I am just staying in the moment. There is a lot to be said about being 20-0 but we aren't satisfied."
The 20-0 start for the Warriors is the longest streak to open a season in NBA history."It is surprising to me because the league has been around a very long time and nobody has done what we are doing. We are proud of it," Curry said.
Golden State roared to a 28-13 lead halfway through the first quarter then stretched it to 26 in the second half.
The Warriors also got 21 points from guard Klay Thompson, including 15 in the first quarter.
- Season-high performance -
Bryant's field goal from 16 feet capped a season-high 31-point performance and helped snap the Lakers' seven game losing skid.
"It has been a long season to say the least. It felt good to get one," Bryant said. The 37-year-old Bryant scored 18 points in the first half and 12 in the fourth quarter for the Lakers.
Washington served as the second stop on his farewell tour. For much of this season, it appeared the five-time NBA champion's shooting touch had disappeared. It was like a giant hand reached up and turned back the clock Wednesday on the 20-year veteran who showed off some vintage moves including pull-up jumpers and fadeaway field goals with the sell-out Washington crowd of 20,300 applauding him."It is surreal," he said of the cheering on the road. "To get this respect is amazing."Bryant entered his lone appearance in Washington shooting 30.1 percent from the field. He finished 10-of-24 against the Wizards including four-of-11 from beyond the arc.But most importantly for Bryant he still had something left in the tank in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.
"I feel really good right now," he said. "I have pushed it hard in training."What I try to do is stay loose during the game and move as much possible so I don't stiffen up."

Manziel, Romo, outrage: Jerry Jones meeting had everything

Jerry Jones at last had enough.
The Cowboys proprietor was flame broiled on his week by week spot on a Dallas radio station this week, and had enough when the hosts scrutinized his Tony Romo desires.

Jones discussed the 3-8 Cowboys' battles this season and gave an unclear diagram of their tentative arrangements at quarterback. Jones said the group would think about drafting as a quarterback before next season, yet impossible in the first round to some degree on the grounds that he said he trusts the 35-year-old Romo has four to five years of football left.

"In the event that you take a gander at his playing time – he began late – he has fantastic abilities in respect to where his aptitude set started. More imperative than anything, from a mental outlook he's at the highest priority on the rundown," Jones clarif
At the point when one of the hosts hindered to scrutinize that sunny attitude toward Romo, who has twice harmed his collarbone, costing him the vast majority of the 2015 season, Jones intruded on rapidly.

"This is not a damn civil argument we are having here," Jones said. "You realize that I don't know whether he has four to five years. You're asking me what I think, and I think we have a remarkable quarterback for the following four to five years. That is not a killjoy. Will we be hoping to create ability behind Romo? Totally."

Jones, to some degree absurdly, recommended Brandon Weeden, 32, could have been that quarterback without bounds had he not battled with his chance to supplant Romo this season. The line of addressing likewise gave Jones a chance to raise the group's close drafting of Johnny Manziel in 2014.

"Do you recollect two years back when we sat there till the last second on Manziel?" Jones inquired. "That was the entire motivation behind doing that. I felt Romo had additional time, and in the event that we sat there and worked with Manziel for four to five years – now we all recognize what's happened with off-field issues – however on our load up one of our main five or six picks tumbled to us, and I was fundamentally a vote of one to go there. More Day-Night Tests Touted After Adelaide Success

The crowds loved the experience with a total attendance of 123,736 fans thronging into Adelaide Oval over the three lively days. Based on the initial evidence, day-night Tests look set to become part of global cricket schedules for years to come.

More pink-ball day-night Test matches are planned after the spectacular success of the historic trailblazer at the Adelaide Oval, which won plaudits from fans, players and cricket chiefs. (International Cricket Council Hails Successful Debut For Day-Night Test)
Test cricket got a pulsating makeover as Australia claimed a thrilling three-wicket win over New Zealand in the first Test in the game's 138-year history to be played under lights.Thirty-seven wickets tumbled in three days as the pink ball dominated the bat, in stark contrast to the run-laden low-attended first two Tests in Brisbane and Perth. (Steven Smith, Brendon McCullum Praise Day-Night Test as Success)
The crowds loved the experience with a total attendance of 123,736 fans thronging into Adelaide Oval over the three lively days. The opening day gate of 47,441 was the biggest at the Adelaide Test since the famous 1932-33 'bodyline' series.Host broadcaster, the Nine Network, was also beaming with 3.19 million prime-time TV viewers across the nation watching Sunday's last day, far more than normal for the third day of a Test.Rival skippers Steve Smith and Brendon McCullum were in unison about the success of the initiative. (What a Coincidence! First Day-Night ODI, First Day-Night Test Played on Same Date!)
"The whole Test match was a great innovation, it was a great spectacle, and to get 120,000 people through the gates in three days is absolutely amazing," said Australia's Smith.McCullum enthused: "It's a great concept. Overall, it's a roaring success -- 120,000 people turning up over three days. People are voting with their feet. I think it's here to stay, which is great."The glowing praise appeared to justify Cricket Australia's initiative and is emboldening them to flag the prospect of two more day-night Tests when South Africa and Pakistan tour next year. The national body see day-night cricket along with the luminous pink-ball as the panacea to arrest dwindling interest in the traditional five-day format.Based on the initial evidence, day-night Tests look set to become part of global cricket schedules for years to come.
Fans want more
The South Australian Cricket Association is already negotiating to host another day-nighter against Pakistan in Adelaide next December, while South Africa are expected to get their first experience of pink ball cricket in Brisbane in the traditional home season opening Test."I don't see why not, right time, place and conditions and the fans are calling out for it," CA chief executive James Sutherland said of the chances of the Gabba getting a pink-ball Test."The Gabba is a good option and have upgraded their lights, and I would have thought a balmy Test would be a pretty good place to watch cricket."International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson said the concept was here to stay.
"The inaugural day-night Test in Adelaide was a huge success, enjoyed by cricket followers across the world," he said.
"Although day-night Tests will not be feasible at every venue, it certainly provides a new dimension for players, spectators, broadcasters and fans alike and it is here to stay."
Prior concerns over the durability and visibility of the pink ball prompted Adelaide ground staff to produce a grassy pitch and square to ensure the newly-designed ball stayed in shape longer.
There were no major problems and not once was the ball changed during the three days of play.
McCullum felt there was a "touch too much" grass on the strip and said it was something to keep in mind for the next day-night Test."As pink-ball cricket evolves we'll see the pitches won't have quite as much grass on them," he said.
"It's meant to allow Tests to be played at night and it's not meant to differ or change how Test cricket is played. Under lights the pink ball responded a little bit much."Australia coach Darren Lehmann agreed but fully supported the day-night Test concept.
"Maybe a little less grass, as a batter at night it was quite difficult," Lehmann said, but added: "It was exciting. It's great to see a contest between bat and ball."

lay the Jets on Sunday, a key game for both teams if they want to stay in thWhen the New York Jets released defensive end Quinton Coples on Monday, it came as a bit of a surprise. Yes, the 2012 first-round pick had become a bit player, but he was released late Monday morning, not long after the Jets returned home from a disappointing loss in Houston to the Texans.Though first-year head coach Todd Bowles told reporters the release had to do with playing time and Coples being ill-suited to the defensive scheme, there reportedly was an event that led to the team cutting ties with him.ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini, citing a team source, reported Sunday that Coples was "involved in an incident" on the team's charter home from Houston. Cimini wrote that it is unclear what happened on the flight, "but it didn't sit well with the powers-that-be, sealing his fate."Coples played a season-low five snaps (out of 75) against Houston, part of a pattern over the last several weeks that saw his snaps plummet. After starting the first two games of the season, Coples played just 120 of 532 (22.6 percent) defensive snaps over his final eight games with the Jets.Earlier this week, Newsday's Kimberley Martin reported that there had long been questions about Coples' passion for the game of football, and that Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum overlooked Coples' lack of drive because they were enticed by the athleticism the 6-foot-6, 290-pound prospect from North Carolina possessed. In his time as head coach, Bowles has shown he has little patience for bad behavior - he cut IK Enemkpali immediately after Enemkpali sucker punched Geno Smith during training camp, and now he's cut ties with Coples.Coples was claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins, where Tannenbaum is in charge of football operations, though the Bills, where Ryan is now head coach, also put in a claim for him.Miami and its newest player, Coples, pe race for an AFC wildcard spot.

India salvage 2-2 draw against Australia in first hockey Test.VR Raghunath slammed two goals for the hosts in the 28th and 43rd minute to draw 2-2 against Australia.

Drag-flicker VR Raghunath scored two goals to help India settle for a 2-2 draw against world champions Australia in the first hockey Test of the three-match series, in Raipur on Thursday.
The series has been organised as a preparation for both the teams ahead of Hero Hockey World League Finals to be held in Raipur from November 27 to December 6.
Raghunath slammed two goals for the hosts in the 28th and 43rd minute, while Australia salvaged the draw riding on an early goal by Dylan Wotherspoon (9th) and a late strike strike by penalty corner specialist Chris Ciriello (58th).
Thursday’s match also marked Chhattisgarh’s first-ever exposure to an international hockey match. The remaining two Tests of the series match will be played on November 22 and 23 at the recently inaugurated Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel International Hocke Stadium in Raipur, which wil host the HWL Final.World leaders Australia drew the first blood through a field goal from Wotherspoon in the ninth minute.Stunned by the early goal from the visitors and that too in front of a packed home crowd, India showed more purpose and pressed hard for the eqauliser.
Their effors bore fruit soon when India were awarded a penalty corner and Raghunath made no mistakes in slamming the ball to the back of the Australian net in the 28th minute to level the scores.
After the change of ends, the Indians kept up the pressure on the Australian defence, which resulted in another goal from Raghunath through a penalty corner in the 43rd minute.The goal rattled Australia but the Kookaburras were known for their fighting spirit and came all out attacking in search of the eqauliser. The Indian defence stood tall amid a series of Australian attacks but succumbed under pressure in the final two minutes of the game and conceded a penalty corner, which was duly converted by Ciriello to make it 2-2.
“It was an important match, and we were tested on all fronts. The good news is that we have shown composure and we played with the hunger to win. We will go back to reconstruct our strategy for the next match and hopefully we should see the results favouring us,” said India’s chief coach and High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans.

Brady drives Pats close enough for long Gostkowski field goal. Panthers also 9-0. Big Ben returns.
New England's Malcolm Butler breaks up a pass intended for Odell Beckham of the Giants in Sunday's game.
New England's Malcolm Butler breaks up a pass intended for Odell Beckham of the Giants in Sunday's game.

Stephen Gostkowski’s 54-yard field goal with one second remaining Sunday kept the New England Patriots unbeaten with a 27-26 victory over the New York Giants.
After Josh Brown made his fourth field goal of the game with 1:47 remaining, Tom Brady drove the Patriots 44 yards, converting a fourth-and-10 on the series. Gostkowski, the NFL’s leading scorer the last three seasons, sent his winning kick soaring through the uprights.
“You’re one kick away from being Public Enemy No. 1,” Gostkowski said. “You’re always one kick away from trending on Twitter as the No. 1 loser in America. But it’s fun being on a good team. It’s kind of like being on a baseball team where everybody’s got a hit, and you can’t wait to get up there and get a hit, too.”
The Giants have given the 9-0 Patriots fits under Tom Coughlin and nearly pulled off another victory. But you don’t beat New England with field goals, and a five-yard pass to Odell Beckham Jr. on New York’s final drive was originally called a touchdown, then reversed by a video review.
Both Beckham and New England’s Rob Gronkowski had the longest TD catches of their careers: Beckham for 87 yards and Gronkowski for 76.
PANTHERS 27, TITANS 10: Cam Newton completed his first 11 passes, the longest streak of his career, and Carolina remained unbeaten, also at 9-0. The Panthers extended their league-best winning streak to 13 games over two seasons as Newton ran for a touchdown and passed for another score. The Titans suffered their 10th straight home loss in the first home game under interim coach Mike Mularkey. Rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Titans were held scoreless in the second half.
REDSKINS 47, SAINTS 14: Kirk Cousins threw for a career-high four touchdowns — each one longer than any scoring pass he’d completed all season — to lead Washington. Cousins went 20 for 25 for 324 yards, zero interceptions and a perfect passer rating of 158.3, connecting for TDs of 78 yards to Matt Jones, 16 and eight yards to Jordan Reed, and 11 yards to Jamison Crowder. Cousins didn’t have a touchdown toss of more than seven yards until he got to go up against the Saints’ porous and poor-tackling defence. The 33-point margin of victory for the Redskins (4-5) was the team’s largest since beating San Francisco by 35, 52-17, in October 2005.
STEELERS 30, BROWNS 9: Ben Roethlisberger returned from a sprained left foot much earlier than expected and threw for 379 yards, including three touchdowns for Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger started out on the bench but entered in the first quarter after Landry Jones went down with a left ankle injury. Roethlisberger completed 22 of 33 passes and was sacked once as Pittsburgh won its second straight. Antonio Brown caught 10 passes for 139 yards and two scores as the Steelers remained unbeaten at home against Cleveland since 2003. Johnny Manziel passed for a career-high 372 yards with a touchdown and an interception but was also sacked six times. The Browns, ran for just 15 yards and were penalized 11 times for 159 yards.
JAGUARS 22, RAVENS 20: Jason Myers kicked a 53-yard field goal after Jacksonville got one final play on a facemask penalty with no time left, and the Jaguars ended their 13-game road losing streak. Down 20-19 with no timeouts, the Jaguars got the ball at their 20 with 1:06 left. After moving to the Baltimore 49, Blake Bortles took the snap an instant before the clock expired and was quickly sacked by Elvis Dumervil. But Dumervil grabbed the quarterback’s facemask, giving the Jaguars one final play even though the clock read 0:00. The victory enabled the Jaguars to end a road skid that followed a win in Cleveland on Dec. 1, 2013.
VIKINGS 30, RAIDERS 14: Adrian Peterson ran for 203 yards and a touchdown in his record-tying sixth career 200-yard game, Cordarrelle Patterson returned a kick 93 yards for a score and Minnesota took over sole possession of first place in the NFC North by winning in Oakland. Teddy Bridgewater threw a touchdown pass, and the Vikings held the Raiders’ potent offence in check for their fifth straight win. Minnesota moved a game ahead of Green Bay in the division heading into next week’s showdown at home with the Packers. Derek Carr threw two touchdown passes for the Raiders, but also was intercepted twice. Oakland lost its second straight game to fall further behind in the AFC playoff race.
DOLPHINS 20, EAGLES 19: Chris McCain knocked Rams QB Sam Bradford out and Reshad Jones spoiled Eagle Mark Sanchez’s comeback bid. Ryan Tannehill threw a go-ahead four-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis Landry and the defence held on for Miami. Bradford injured his left shoulder and sustained a concussion on a hard hit by McCain in the third quarter and didn’t return, though X-rays were negative. Sanchez drove the Eagles to the Dolphins eight late in the fourth quarter, but Jones intercepted his pass in the end zone. Miami’s defence held again in the final minute.
BUCCANEERS 10, COWBOYS 6: Jameis Winston scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper with 54 seconds remaining, extending Dallas’ longest losing streak since 1989 to seven games. The No. 1 draft pick shrugged off two interceptions — the first he’d thrown in a month — and benefited from a defensive holding call that wiped out his goal-line fumble on the play before the rookie faked a handoff to Doug Martin and circled around right end all alone. The Cowboys reached the Tampa Bay 44 following the ensuing kickoff, but Matt Cassel’s throw to the end zone intended for Dez Bryant was intercepted by Bradley McDougald.

Bernier’s blunder helps sink Leafs in Big Apple: DiManno......

Leaf Dion Phaneuf reaches for a loose puck in front of Ranger goalie Antti Raanta in Sunday night's game.

Leaf Dion Phaneuf reaches for a loose puck in front of Ranger goalie Antti Raanta in Sunday night's game.

NEW YORK—Not for the first time, Mike Babcock relied on the hockey Zen found at 36,000 feet to make a down-on-the-ice goaltender decision.
Somewhere between the Big Smoke and the Big Apple — perchance whilst ascending aboard the team charter over Lake Ontario or at cruise altitude across the Catskills or banking down the lovely autumn palette of Hudson Valley — the Maple Leaf bench boss committed to Jonathan Bernier as his starter for Sunday’s encounter at Madison Square Garden.
Didn’t even make it back to the airport for the flight home before he’d decided to reverse throttle.
“Well, Reims is starting against Colorado,’’ Babcock announced after his club dropped a squeaker to the mighty Rangers, a 4-3 loss, the winner scored by Leaf nemesis Mats Zuccarello after a huge rebound with a mere 54 seconds left in regulation time.
That’s Reimer, James Reimer.
“The bottom line is, we’re in the winning business. You’ve got to earn your own confidence. That’s how the league is.’’
So don’t give me no boo hoo, Jonathan.
Bernier got his chance, again, to make a good impression — which would have been his first, frankly, this season. He blew it. In ghastly fashion, such that the many decent and more-than-decent saves executed on this night in the Leaf net didn’t amount to a hill of beans.
Bernier has become a serial stiff — even if only one (1) dunderhead flub marks the spot. Because that’s all it takes to suck the guts out of a team.
And this is now Bernier’s motif.
He was handed the net on Sunday, despite Reimer getting in the goalie groove nicely through a three-game win streak for Toronto — a modest success, admittedly, but they hadn’t managed it since Dec. 13-16, 2014 — and five games without a regulation time loss (3-0-2), yeoman duty for a guy who just can’t buy No. 1 bona fides.
But Bernier, last seen between the pipes on Oct. 31 — out with a lower-body injury; think real low, ’round the ankle, but a coach’s decision the previous two games — had been quietly waiting to reclaim the crease he clearly considers his real estate, 0-6-1 record notwithstanding.
Actually, Babcock didn’t sound all that invested in Bernier as his go-to-goalie as the Leafs returned to New York for the second time in a fortnight, though obviously there was some urgency building to get the guy back in active harness. “I did that early,’’ Babcock had noted of his fealty to Bernier through October, speaking a few hours before the Rangers set his team aside abruptly — Zuccarello, backhand to forehand, drawing Bernier out of his crease and out of position, Morgan Rielly sprawling vainly in pursuit.
The Z-Man: five goals against Toronto in two games this season.
From Babcock’s perspective, he’d cleaved to Bernier gamely, even as the losses piled up, and the netminder could be relied on for at least one cringe-inducing goal surrendered per game, often on the first shot faced.
"""""'And Reimer decided he wanted the job,” Babcock continued. “So he took the job. So now Berns gets an opportunity.’’ He added, obliquely: “No one can give you confidence. You’ve got to earn your way back"""""
